Setting up a grow box could be done in a jiffy or could take up a lot more time of your choosing. Now that you have this mini garden installed, how can you best keep it a healthy environment for your plant to thrive? This is not rocket science and you shouldn’t be surprised to know that the principles behind the best practices of maintaining a grow box are quite fundamental in all other aspects of cultivating any harmless living organism.

The first and foremost that should be observed is cleanliness. Clean your grow box regularly by removing the dusts or dirt foreign to it. This should prevent more dust from settling on the leaves. Dust hampers the efficiency of the plant’s food production and thereby stunts its growth so you will also have to clean the plant occasionally as layers of dust can settle and accumulate on the leaves over time. If there is a fan installed, this would have to be cleaned more often as it accumulates dust much faster than the rest of the box. You will have to regularly clean the drip pan or the drainage system so molds will not start to develop and possibly damage your plants. If you are living in a tropical region, avoid keeping an exposed batch of still water around for quite some time as this is often a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Check the condition of the structure at times. Since your plant will be growing, you may need to make adjustments to make more room for its growth. There could be a number of plants that may suddenly start competing for the light source or even just the space. You can avoid this by making the necessary adjustments as needed so your plants have enough breathing room. If the box has metal parts, make sure you keep these surfaces dry to avoid the formation of rust. You can tell if a metal part is susceptible to rust if your fridge magnet can stick to it. You may have to put another coat of paint on sections where the paint has chipped off.

Check the performance of the components of the system from time to time. You may have to replace light bulbs or some LED lights that are no longer working. The need for repairs is more imminent when you build a grow box with salvaged materials or ones that were previously used for other purposes.
