Setting up a grow box could be done in a jiffy or could take up a lot more time of your choosing. Now that you have this mini garden installed, how can you best keep it a healthy environment for your plant to thrive? This is not rocket science and you shouldn’t be surprised to know that the principles behind the best practices of maintaining a grow box are quite fundamental in all other aspects of cultivating any harmless living organism.

The first and foremost that should be observed is cleanliness. Clean your grow box regularly by removing the dusts or dirt foreign to it. This should prevent more dust from settling on the leaves. Dust hampers the efficiency of the plant’s food production and thereby stunts its growth so you will also have to clean the plant occasionally as layers of dust can settle and accumulate on the leaves over time. If there is a fan installed, this would have to be cleaned more often as it accumulates dust much faster than the rest of the box. You will have to regularly clean the drip pan or the drainage system so molds will not start to develop and possibly damage your plants. If you are living in a tropical region, avoid keeping an exposed batch of still water around for quite some time as this is often a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Check the condition of the structure at times. Since your plant will be growing, you may need to make adjustments to make more room for its growth. There could be a number of plants that may suddenly start competing for the light source or even just the space. You can avoid this by making the necessary adjustments as needed so your plants have enough breathing room. If the box has metal parts, make sure you keep these surfaces dry to avoid the formation of rust. You can tell if a metal part is susceptible to rust if your fridge magnet can stick to it. You may have to put another coat of paint on sections where the paint has chipped off.

Check the performance of the components of the system from time to time. You may have to replace light bulbs or some LED lights that are no longer working. The need for repairs is more imminent when you build a grow box with salvaged materials or ones that were previously used for other purposes.

If you have done a search on the topic of grow box, you would probably have come across many forums where people talk about their projects at home. It looks interesting because there are people who have spent time and effort into growing plants indoors with a more elaborate setup than just a potted plant placed by the window. There are many reasons why people go this length to grow quality indoor plants such as herbs and vegetables that would not grow all year round.

Such idea is appealing to most apartment dwellers that neither have the garden space nor some other outdoor space for even just a little vegetation. Whether or not you pay that much attention to your living space, a spot of lush green life does have a visual and psychological impact. Green is the color of abundance and thanks to many hobbyists; this color is not just confined to ornamental plants.

You can grow your favorite vegetables all year round right in your kitchen or some available space at home. A grow box is pretty much a self-contained hospitable environment for your plant to thrive. Imagine growing fresh herbs, tomatoes or lettuce that could thrive even through the harshest winters. You would not have to worry about driving how many miles to the supermarket just to get out of season produce that come from thousands of miles and have been treated to prolong its shelf life. You can pretty much guarantee your own supply of organically grown and pesticide-free vegetables.

Another benefit of having a grow box is that it is pretty much less susceptible to pests. Your home is a much cleaner and safer environment for plants to thrive since these will not be exposed to the elements, airborne contaminants, spores, weeds, fungi and a long list of plant unfriendly influences.

Should you have a garden, you can still benefit from grow boxes for cultivating seedlings. You wouldn’t have to purchase perennial plants each spring. You can grow the seedlings right at home in anticipation of spring time. It could be a fun and worthwhile project for your and even the entire family.

In Summary:

Grow boxes make the best introduction to people who are planning to get started on some serious gardening. It’s not daunting and quite inexpensive if you are thinking of how to build a grow box on your own. It is fairly simple and easy to start as a project that could probably lead to a very rewarding botanical hobby.

If you do not have much time to put into experimenting your very first own-built grow box, I would recommend that you purchase one instead.

If you believe that building a grow box would be too much of an experiment to probably put many hours into and possibly not see any success in growing plants, then your solution is buying a commercial or professional one. There are plenty of stores online that offer the green solution to growing plants indoors all year round. Each product comes with many different features and the prices range from cheap to ludicrously expensive for the type of setup being offered.

How to choose the best grow box for yourself? The features to look for would depend on the type of plant you need to grow and the amount of time you have in tending to it. You have the option of getting a hydroponics system or a soil one. You can even choose from cabinets to used computer cases and much everything else.

When you have decided what you really want to grow, look up what that plant needs to thrive well. Does it need a lot of light? Will the hydroponics system yield better results for that variety? After these questions are answered, you can then select the size of the grow box you desire.

Check out the many systems out there. When you are selecting from many choices, list down the key features of each and compare. List down your capabilities as well just so you know which type would be most suitable for you in terms of ease of use and how reasonable the price is. You wouldn’t want to buy an expensive kit that comes with many other features you don’t need.

You have probably heard of grow tents. Since the size of these units are much bigger than the box, it is almost as if you’re growing plants in a room without the controlled environment that a grow box offers. There are far too many factors to consider when predicting the success rate of growing your plants.

Find reputable suppliers online. Compare their products and the prices. You may possibly come across setups that are a tad bit fancy but you could most likely come up with better substitutes anyway. Take for instance the grow cabinet. It literally is an ordinary cabinet that you could probably find in a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) store only it has reflective inner lining. Compare its features and price to that of a cabinet for clothes. It really just seems like an ordinary cabinet with reflective inner lining that could be replicated anyway.

In Summary:

Whatever your preferences are, find the model that would best fit your lifestyle and knowing how to maintain a grow box is necessary.

Do you know that you can build your own grow box without going out of your way to purchase the materials. You might already have these in your own home. You shouldn’t be surprised as almost anything in the household has a potential for many other uses and could be transformed to a hospitable host to plants of your choice. Just where do you start looking? You can look in your kitchen, in your garage or anywhere else in the house for things that are lying around and have not been in use for quite some length of time that you can hardly remember. Should you go on building that grow box right away? Wait just a minute. The first practical thing to do before committing any action is to plan.

Plan the space for your grow box. What would be a perfect spot? Remember that plants need light to thrive so they can transform water and other nutrients from the soil into food. Do you have a space near the window? That might be ideal. If not, you can place the box somewhere closer to the outlet or a source of energy for that lighting that you will install later on.

Now that you have found that right spot for your project, measure the size of the space so you can approximate the amount of materials you will need. The rule of thumb is building a bigger box than the number and size of plants you will initially place so there would be enough room for these plants to grow.

The next part is selecting your materials. The popular containers which require very little DIY (Do-It-Yourself) effort are computer or PC casings, cardboard boxes, big old plastic containers and cabinets. You will also need a light source. Light bulbs or LED lights can be used. You can also use reflective materials such as aluminum foil. You may consider installing a fan. The intricacy of the design is entirely up to you.

The fastest grow box to make would be that from a big old plastic tub like Rubbermaid’s. You only have to drill holes on the cover that make up a grid for the LED lights. Old computer casings are good since installing lights on them would be relatively easy. Cardboard boxes are quite handy when you need some reflectors. You can cover their surfaces with aluminum foil.

In Summary:

You already have the materials for that first grow box in your house. With some imagination and elbow grease, you wouldn’t have to spend a dime. Yet you have decided to buy one, then you should also learn how to buy a grow box too.
