Most of us love to pick up gardening as a hobby but this hobby is not able to last us the whole year round as winter could easily ruin it unless we are fortunate enough to own a greenhouse. Now it is possible for us to grow plants, vegetables or herbs indoor within a small contained portable area or closet called an “indoor grow box” or also known as an “indoor greenhouse“. You are limited to whatever that will fit into one by window and there is a need to have a specific environment for it too.

What Exactly Is A Grow Box?

It is fundamentally a small structure, usually a closet, or think of it like a special room that grows plants within a contained area under the right conditions eg. temperature or humidity, using special lighting.

It is usually portable so that you can move it around in your home, or when you decide to move house. There is absolutely no need for you to modify your home in any way. It keeps the light-proofing, moisture level and other important factors self-contained so that you can enjoy gardening in an apartment without affecting your living space.

There are several benefits of a grow box but usually people get one so that they can have their own supply of organically grown and pesticide-free vegetables. If you own a garden, a grow box can be used for cultivating of seedlings too.

You can learn how to build a grow box yourself or how to buy a grow box off-the-shelf depending on your budget. If you wish to customize one for your home, there are plenty of online videos that are available to teach you how to do-it-yourself (DIY). If you decide to buy one instead, you should be able to choose from a range of different sizes that can fit a garden into whatever space you have.

What To Take Note:

(1) When you first set up your space for your grow box, remember to cater for your growing plants to expand. This is to ensure that you have plenty of room when your plants grow or you need to plant more in future.

(2) When setting up the growing light, you should check the amount of light your plants require and be sure to fix it directly above the plants. If possible, place your grow box directly next to your window that allows natural sunlight in to provide additional light.

(3) There is a need for you to turn on your grow light approximately 12 hours to 24 hours each day.

(4) You need to place a drainage pan or something similar so that it can catch and store water running out from the box after watering.

(5) Fertilizers or growing substances should be used in proportion to the amount of plants grown. Ratio of fertilizing should be controlled since the plants are now grown indoor.

(6) Pesticides are generally not encouraged as it is usually unnecessary, since your grow box is indoor and exposed to lesser pests.

(7) You should learn how to maintain a grow box properly to keep a healthy environment for your plants and yourself.

In Summary:

Getting or constructing your own grow box may not be as complex as what it sounds and you think. The process of doing it can be really fun and the results can be rewarding too.
